First Week in Year 404-09-2020 | 15:20:23 | No Comments

What a super first (mini) week we have had!

Not only have we been looking at our new Topic of the Ancient Greeks but we have been writing some fantastic descriptions in English.

Today we continued our work on Ancient Greek pottery and after becoming an archaeologist and looking at some images of real Ancient Greek pots we used that information to design our own. Miss Whitmore and Miss Hampson were so impressed they have put them to sell in a pottery shop!

Take a look.

Lighting up liquids #WerringtonSTEM12-03-2020 | 16:13:20 | No Comments

Today for science week we have been looking at the properties of different liquids by making lava lamps.

After adding water to a bottle we looked at what happened when food colouring was added and how it dissolved into the water. After this we observed how the behavior of oil was different when mixed into the solution. The oil and water solution separated!

Using the mixture we added washing up liquid and saw how it reacted with the oil. Each time we added a layer we observed using a torch to illuminate the layers in the bottle. Too finish off we added glitter to make our lava lamps shimmer.

The spring sunshine gave Year 4 perfect conditions for trying out their fire-lighting skills on Friday. They worked hard to perfect the first three stages in the continuum of fire lighting. All of the children were able to create a spark, followed by a shower of sparks that then travelled onto some tinder to create a small flame. Super progress made year 4, well done.

Today, Year 4 tried to create waterproof shelters as protection from the elements. They also considered how to collect and store rainwater for survival in the outdoors. They were very inventive in their ideas for water storage and quickly worked out places that would not be suitable for shelters.

Zip Zap, Hashtag Fire14-02-2020 | 16:02:22 | No Comments

Year 4 learned a new game today called Zip, Zap, Fizz, Buzz. We only managed the Zip Zap but had lots of fun mixing up our zips and zaps! We then discussed 4 different styles of creating a fire. Working in groups, the children had to choose a suitable location (considering safety) and then create their own style in preparation for fire lighting after half term. Well done to all!

Women in STEM #WerringtonSTEM11-02-2020 | 17:10:05 | No Comments

Over the last few weeks Year 4 have been looking at the life and work of Edith Clarke.

She was one of the first women to gain a degree in Electrical Engineering.

We had a great time researching her and trying to understand some of the mathematics she used!

We also had the chance to look around the hall at some of the other famous women in STEM that other year groups had researched.

To finish off our day we had our own experiment in science where we looked at how sound is made and what effect the sound vibrations have on solids, liquids and the air around us.

This week, Year 4 thought about the different grades of wood needed for constructing a fire. We discussed how fires are started with tinder and/or kindling and then larger pieces of wood are added after. We then used a billhook to split some larger pieces of wood ready for burning.

Year 4 revised their fire-lighting skills with a relay-race to see who can create sparks the fastest. It was tricky at first but with a little perseverance they got it in the end. They also began tidying some of the school grounds in preparation for our planting project. As super morning of Forest School. Well done Year 4!

Year 4’s Forest School session focused on building a raised platform suitable for keeping a fire away from the wet ground. Working in groups, the children had to think about which materials would suit the task and how they would create a sturdy platform that was in an appropriate place. The children were assessing risks for themselves and had some interesting ideas.

Year 4 threw themselves wholeheartedly into their first Forest School session of the year with a revision of their knot tying skills and a challenge to create their own games using natural materials found outside. They had some fantastic ideas with the sticky fishing game being one of our favourites!
